What is the Throne on Square Town?
One tile, one owner, a crown, and a price that only goes up.
The Throne (on Square Town) is the 4×4 block at the exact centre of the wall: a single gold tile with a crown, one owner, intro price $100. Like any square it can be evicted for double the last price, and every eviction doubles it again — $100 → $200 → $400 → $800 → … The ring of cells around it, its aura, can never be built on, so the Throne always stands alone. Square Town (square.pov.town) has exactly one.
TL;DR: the most visible spot on the wall, priced by whoever wanted it last. After ten evictions it costs $102,400.
How it works on Square Town
The 1024×1024 grid has no single centre cell, so the Throne is the 4×4 block that straddles the midpoint (cells 510–513 on both axes). It is never auto-assigned and never sold as ordinary squares; it has its own buy flow at $100 via Stripe (that is $6.25 per square, if you like arithmetic). It is inside the launch 16×16 live area, so it is on sale from day one, and because the wall zooms and pans centred on it, every visitor sees it first.
The aura is the one-cell ring around the block — 20 cells in a 6×6 frame — and trying to buy any of them returns "the aura of the Throne is too strong 👑". Evicting the Throne owner works exactly like evicting anyone: pay double, take the tile, get announced in the live feed, and the next evictor pays double your price. There is no cap. Prices: Pricing — $1 a square, one time, forever*.
Where else it appears
Pay-to-hold-the-centre has ancestors. King of the Ether Throne (2016) let anyone claim a throne for 0.5 ETH plus 33 % per claim, with the monarch "dying" after 14 days and the price resetting — the direct ancestor. The King of the Internet (dethrone for $1 more) is dead as of August 2026. Milliboard runs a "Daily Throne" on a pay-to-rank list; The Pixel Orbit gives the exact centre to the highest cumulative payer and re-sorts the canvas around them; overwrite.place makes one artwork occupy the whole homepage until it is displaced. Square Town's difference is that the Throne sits on a spatial wall of ordinary $1 squares, and the price rule is a fixed 2× rather than +33 % or +1¢. History: A short history of paying to hold the centre.
Example
Day one: someone pays $100 and their favicon sits under a crown in the middle of the wall. A rival evicts them for $200. A third party, mostly to make a point, pays $400. To take it back the original owner now needs $800 — and the feed has recorded all four moves. Meanwhile the surrounding ring unlocks fill in around the aura, so the Throne is always the centre of the biggest crowd.
FAQ
How much does the Throne cost?
$100 to start. Each eviction doubles the price: $200, $400, $800 and so on, with no ceiling.
Can I buy the squares next to the Throne?
Not the immediate ring — the 20 aura cells are permanently off limits. The cells one step further out are ordinary $1 squares and are the closest you can get.
Is there more than one Throne?
No. One 4×4 block, one owner, one crown.
Does the Throne owner get anything else?
A gold tile, a crown, first-glance visibility for every visitor, and the same deed analytics as any square. No SEO benefit is claimed.
