Square Town vs SaaSBoard: $1 favicon square or free logo tile?
The two closest products on the shelf. One is free until it isn't; the other is a dollar and then it's a game.
SaaSBoard (saasboard.app) is a logo grid for SaaS and indie products: a free 1×1 tile on a 100×100 zoomable canvas, with bigger blocks at $10 per tile per month or $100 per tile per year. Square Town (square.pov.town) is a favicon wall: $1 buys one 1×1 square, one-time, on a live 3D grid where anyone can evict you for double. The difference is a free-tier directory with a subscription upsell versus a one-time game of location.

What SaaSBoard does well
Free is free. A 1×1 tile costs nothing. If you only want your logo on a grid where other SaaS founders will see it, SaaSBoard's floor is $0 and Square Town's is $1. That is a real advantage for anyone allergic to entering a card.
You control size. Bigger blocks exist. Drag out a 2×2 or larger, pay per tile per month, and your logo is physically larger than the free tiles around it. Square Town has no sizes: every square is 1×1 and the only ways to stand out are position, click height in 3D and being kissed.
Uploaded logo and a description. You choose the artwork and write a line about the product. Square Town shows only your favicon; if your favicon is bad at 16px, that is your problem (see Favicon design tips: an icon that reads at 16 pixels).
A niche that knows itself. SaaSBoard is explicitly for SaaS. The audience is narrower and more relevant if that is your market. Square Town is for anything with a URL.
What Square Town does differently
One-time, not recurring. $1 once. There is no plan to cancel, no renewal email, and no tile that quietly disappears when a card expires. On SaaSBoard the free tile is permanent, but any block bigger than 1×1 is a subscription.
Zero design input. Paste a URL and Square Town fetches the favicon via Google's favicon service. No upload, no crop, no description. If your site has no favicon it gets a clown emoji until it does — and a public spot in the Hall of Clowns.
Everything can be taken. Anyone can evict any square by paying double its last price. A $1 square costs $2 to take, then $4, then $8. The Throne (the 4×4 centre) starts at $100 and doubles on each eviction. Nothing on SaaSBoard can be taken from you while you pay.
Decay unless kissed. An icon that nobody has kissed for 90 days fades to grayscale. Anyone can kiss any icon, free, and kisses are counted publicly. It is a small daily reason to look at the wall.
Live and 3D. Buys, evictions, kisses and ring unlocks are pushed to all open browsers over WebSockets. Tilt the wall and each favicon is a tower whose height is its click count, tinted by the icon's dominant colour.
Analytics without an account. After buying you get a secret deed URL. The deed shows views, clicks and kisses; $5 one-time unlocks per-day charts. Lose the URL and it is gone — there is no login to recover it.
Who should pick SaaSBoard
- You want a free listing and are not going to pay for anything.
- You want a bigger logo than your neighbours and are happy to pay per tile per month or year for it.
- You want a description next to your logo, not just an icon.
- Your product is SaaS and you want to be seen specifically by SaaS people.
Who should pick Square Town
- You want to pay once and stop thinking about billing.
- You have several projects: five squares is $5, forever* — see Square Town for developers with many side projects: $1 per favicon.
- You want the position to matter — near the Throne, in a corner, next to a competitor.
- You enjoy the game: evictions, kisses, unlock announcements, leaderboards.
- You want click and view counts per square without creating an account.
Can you use both?
Yes. SaaSBoard's free tile costs nothing and Square Town's square costs $1, so the total for being on both is a dollar. They do different jobs: SaaSBoard is a directory grid where you can buy size, Square Town is a live wall where you buy location and then defend it. Our full ranking of walls and boards is at Every pixel wall you can still buy a spot on, ranked (August 2026); Square Town's prices are at Pricing — $1 a square, one time, forever*.
FAQ
Is SaaSBoard free?
Yes, a 1×1 tile on SaaSBoard is free as of August 2026. Larger blocks are $10 per tile per month or $100 per tile per year, paid via Stripe.
How much is Square Town compared with SaaSBoard?
Square Town is $1 per 1×1 square, one-time. There is no free tier and no bigger sizes. An optional $5 one-time unlock adds per-day analytics to a deed.
Can I upload my logo to Square Town?
No. Square Town fetches your site's favicon from the URL you paste, using Google's favicon service. If your site has no favicon it gets a clown emoji until you add one and press the "I fixed my favicon" recheck.
Can I be removed from SaaSBoard or Square Town?
On SaaSBoard, a paid block lapses if the subscription stops; the free tile is not something we saw an expiry on. On Square Town, anyone can evict you by paying double what you paid, and an icon nobody kisses for 90 days fades to grayscale (you still own it).
Which is better for a SaaS launch?
If you want a free listing and a bigger logo, SaaSBoard. If you want a $1 spot you pick yourself, live activity, 3D click towers and per-square analytics, Square Town. Many founders would sensibly do both — see Square Town for SaaS founders: $1 square, counted clicks, no subscription.
Does either give SEO benefit?
Square Town does not sell backlinks or link equity: clicks go through a counted redirect and the wall is a WebGL canvas. Treat it as visibility and analytics, not SEO. We make no claim about SaaSBoard's markup.
